The Old Abbey Lane Drogheda Bookmark
The Old Abbey Lane Drogheda Bookmark. On the reverse of this bookmark is information on the history of Old Abbey. Old Abbey in Drogheda, or Abbey and Hospital of St. Mary d’Urso, is the oldest standing structure in Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland. It was first founded in 1206 A.D by the Norman, Ursus de Swemele and his wife as a hospital for the sick and infirm. It was then later taken over by the Augustinian Crutched Friars as a Friary, which is probably where the name of the “Abbey” comes from. All that remains of the Abbey now is the central belfry tower, a Gothic archway, an east archway and and a gable wall to the west. Find out more about the history of Drogheda here.
